Lovely Bones 5

Lovely Bones
Alice Sebold
Mystery, thriller
282/328

I am approaching the end of the book and I am very eager to find out what will happen. In this second-to–last section of the book a lot has happened. In the seventeenth chapter Lindsey (Susie’s sister) is now 21 and she is going home from her graduation with her long time boyfriend Samuel. Then it starts to rain so they go to an old, abandoned Victorian house. When Samuel saw it he loved it and he said that he wants to buy it. The family back at home is very exited to see Lindsey and they wait for her. I the house Samuel asked Lindsey to marry him, restore the house they are in now and move in. Susie, who is up in heaven is very happy for Lindsey. The rain has stopped and they decide to head home to tell everyone about the good news. They get home and tell everyone that they are engaged and they celebrate. After that Buckley (Susie’s youngest sibling) sees Susie under the clock and is very tempted to scream out her name but he doesn’t. In the next chapter the author tells you about Ruth and how she is doing. Ruth is a friend of Susie’s in a way. She saw Susie as she was leaving the physical world and that has changed her forever. She is now in New York living in a small apartment. She works in a bar and in her free time she goes to places where women/ girls have been murdered and she writes about them in her notebook. She is now famous in heaven, they admire her work. They think that maybe she will be able to find out or piece together how they were murdered. Buckley, who is now in seventh grade, spends mostly all of his free time in the garden. One morning he wakes up early and takes a box with Susie’s stuff in it and decides to cut them up to use for his garden. As he starts, Jack (Susie’s father) sees him and they get into an argument. Jack tells him that he can’t do that and that those are Susie’s clothes and says that his wife Abigail left him because he couldn’t let go of Susie. Jack then gets a heart attack and is rushed to the hospital. Buckley is now overwhelmed with guilt and prays to Susie to save Jack. Abigail (Jack’s wife who left him and the mother of all three of his children) got a call to tell her that her husband had a heart attack and that he now is in the hospital. She got on the next flight, at the airport Lindsey, Samuel, and Buckley came to wait for her. When she saw them she could barely recognize them. Her arrival was very awkward in a way because of the lack of speech between the characters. You as a reader can feel how much their relationship has changed. She entered the room where Jack was connected to various machines monitoring his heart. In the last chapter of this section Abigail watches Jack as he was sleeping and she realizes how much she loves him. Jack then sees Susie and starts to talk with her. After that Jack finally makes up with Abigail and they agree for her to stay home with him. I have learned many things during this chapter for example that Abigail still cares about the husband that she left many years ago. That has affected the relationships a lot because they are going to move in back together.

I am amazed by what I have read so far. I think that because so many things have changed since the beginning of the book. My recent reading has fulfilled my expectations fully. I have found out so many things about the characters and about the characters I also like that some of the things that I have been hoping for have happened in this chapter. Since Abigail left I felt like she needed to come back like the book wouldn’t have been complete if she didn’t and now that has happened. I think in that last few chapters they will show what will happen in the end and how they will all move on to heaven with Susie.

I have many concerns because I am approaching the end of the book and I am concerned how it will end. I wonder what will happen to Mr. Harvey on the end and if they will figure out that he murdered Susie.

“”Look what it took to get you home.” Was it worth it? She said, smiling bleakly “We’ll have to see” he said” (Sebold, 270)

This passage was said when Abigail went to see Jack in the hospital. He joked about his situation and how this had to happen for her to come back. When I read this my heart broke because after all these years she comes back. She didn’t even look back and now she came back when he was dying.
