The Scarlet Letter

Title: The Scarlet Letter

Author: Nathaniel Hawthorne

Genre: Classic

Comments:

During the past two weeks, I've finished reading The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Task: Post about your favorite character AND your partner's favorite character so far and why?  Be specific about the qualities that you are enjoying.
My favorite character from the book would be Pearl, Hester's daughter. Pearl functions as a symbol in the book. She is quite young during most of the events in the book- for example, when Dimmesdale dies she is only 7 years old-. Her importance in the novel is quite interesting for the reader, she provokes all the adult characters, asking them questions and draws their attention, which is why she's my favorite character! Pearl is intuitive and innocent about everything surrounding her. What I've found out while reading this book, is that younger children are more honest than the adults, and Pearl lies in the most perceptive 'section' of them all.
My partner usually likes really intelligent and evil characters. Her favorite character is Roger Chillingworth, who represents true evil. Roger is Hester's original husband. From what I was reading, the book described that he was a very difficult husband to Hester. He ignored her quite frequently and yet asked for her affection towards him, even though he was behaving ungenerously. When it comes to knowledge, he creates experiments for murdering people. He is always interested in revenge, and NEVER in justice, like good characters would. Overall, the fact that my partner and I have different opinions about characters makes us argue a lot. Which turns out to be interesting because we come up with great ideas at the end.
