Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice
Jane Austen
Classic

Mrs. Bennet, the mother of 5 daughters in England during the 1800's wants all of her daughters to be married as soon as possible, so that when her husband dies they won't be thrown onto the street. She also wants her daughters to be married to rich men so they would be better off. Also after Mr. Bennet dies all of the family's belongings will be inherited by Mr. Collins, the cousin to the 5 Bennet girls. Mr. Collins is a very annoying and a very talkative improper man. He embarrasses the family everywhere he goes. The second eldest of the Bennet daughters was the most against him and to her surprise he actually proposed to her. Elizabeth could not say yes to such a man like this. Her mother very much disproved of this and tried to get Mr. Bennet to make Elizabeth say yes to Mr. Collins. Mr. Bennet however was also not very fond of Mr. Collins. When Elizabeth's mother said that she would never speak to Elizabeth again if she did not say yes to Mr. Collins, Mr. Bennet told Elizabeth that if she does not marry Mr. Collins then her mother would never speak to her again and if she did than her father would never speak to her again. He gave Elizabeth the power to choose, and of course she chose not to marry Mr. Collins. Two days later Mr. Collins was expected to leave. Early the morning he was to leave he went and proposed to another girl, Charlotte, a friend of the Bennet girls. Jane, the eldest of the Bennet daughter went to spend a couple of weeks with her aunt and uncle in London. She did this in hopes that Mr. Bingly would find out that she was there and he might visit. Mr. Bingly was living about 3 miles away from her house in Longbourne and they both really loved each other even though Jane did not show it as much. Mr. Bingly went back to London for some business. A week or two after Jane left to London, Elizabeth went to visit, or save really, Charlotte from Mr. Collins. When Mr. Bingly came to Longbourne he brought his friend Mr. Darcy with him, which while reading on I thought that he was liking Elizabeth more and more. While with Charlotte Mr. Darcy came to meet his aunt, who lived right next to the Collins's. Mr. Darcy was only meaning to stay there for no more than a week, but since Elizabeth was there he stayed longer. One day while in her room Mr. Darcy came to see Elizabeth. He told her that he was in love with her. He also said that even though her family was very embarrassing and rude it did not stop him from loving her. This meant that he was proposing to her. He also confessed to having separated Jane and Mr. Bingly because he thought that Jane did not really love Mr. Bingly because she did not show it that much. Elizabeth was very mad at Mr. Darcy for separating her sister and Mr. Bingly, for insulting her family and for what he did to Mr. Wickham. Mr. Wickham told everyone that Mr. Darcy did not give him was he was entitled for by the late Mr. Darcy, Mr. Darcy's deceased father. Mr. Darcy saw that this was not going very well so he left. The next day when Elizabeth was out walking Mr. Darcy found her and gave her a letter and then walked off. The letter said that he separated Jane and Mr. Blingly because he thought that Jane did not like him and she was only in it for the money because that was what her mother was talking about all of the time. He also explained that Mr. Wickham was entitled to be the leader of the church, but that he did not want that and that he wanted to study law instead. Mr. Darcy helped him get into law school and gave him 3,000 pounds to help him out even though he shouldn't even have gotten it. Mr. Wickham dropped out of the school and demanded Mr. Darcy the job at the church, but Darcy refused because he helped him get into law school. At first while reading this Elizabeth was really mad, but as she read over and over again she realized that it was all true. Jane does not normally show her feelings that much because she is shy, and Mr Wickham mainly told everyone about Mr. Darcy after he left so that he would not hear and put a bad impression on Mr. Wickham.
I can't wait to read what will happen next.

Who is your favorite character and your partner's favorite character so far and why?  Be specific about the qualities that you are enjoying.
Me: My favorite character is Elizabeth, the second oldest Bennet daughter. She is the main character in the book and she is very smart, funny, and outgoing. I wish that I was more like her. Almost everyone likes her and she will only marry if it is with someone she loves, so she will wait forever if that is how long it will take.
My Partner (My Mom): Mr. Darcy is my favorite character because he has the ability to change. When Elizabeth rejects his proposal she enumerates some of his character flaws. Instead of being offended Mr. Darcy takes a closer look at his behavior and the next time they meet he shows that he has changed.
