Around the World in 80 Days

A lot has happened since chapter one when Phileas and Passepartout first met.  Phileas bets with a group of card players to make his trip around the world in 80 days, and this is the start of the plot.  He will get 20,000 Pounds if he can complete the trip.  Detective Fix enters the story in Chapter 5.  Fix starts to follow them from country to country because he thinks Phileas robbed the bank of England.  Fix is trying to create obstacles where they travel, to buy time for the arrest warrant to arrive from England.
Verne gives lots of details about their travels from what the name of the ship they travel on the Suez Canal in to exact times and dates.  The Consul is working with Fix in Suez to apprehend Fog and Passepartout.  All these details must have seemed really interesting to people at the time, because they couldn’t travel like we do today.  For modern times, it seems like a lot of extra, unnecessary information, even if the travel stops are interesting.
